visit pretty much any cafe in greece and you will find people playing backgammon (here, called tavli) -- many cafes have several on hand for you to use.
i love this game, even if mr.g consistently, repeatedly destroys me. it is getting harder for him. we played quite a bit on vacation, but this is a shot of an old set i have at home, a big wooden one that makes a nice sound when you slam the orange and red pieces on the board, as one does when one gets emotional.
