Taxidermia

(2006) ***1/2

Catfreeek unearthed this depraved little nugget early in October. It's far from a traditional horror movie but it’s not fair to label it a mere dark comedy either. Many scenes are undeniably (and unforgettably) gross but it’s intended to pique your morbid curiosity, rather than shock or disturb you.

Taxidermia follows three generations of Hungarian freaks. This isn’t meant as an insult. I simply can’t think of a more appropriate word. The one thing the three have in common is an artistic obsession with their respective hobbies and these obsessions ultimately claim their lives. The grandfather’s hobby is masturbation, the father’s is eating and the son’s is taxidermy.

First we’re introduced to Morogorvski, a peasant soldier who is spends his days working menial labor and getting verbally abused by his superior. His one joy in life is ejaculation and he becomes quite good at achieving it in a plethora of creative ways. *shudder* His son finds fame early in life as a competitive eater but is later reduced to a helpless, bedridden blob. The grandson grows up to be a pasty, anti-social taxidermist with issues of his own and he resents having to take care of his miserable, immobile father.

You can probably imagine where extreme obsessions with such hobbies might lead. Or perhaps not. Director György Pálfi has quite a twisted imagination and the sky is the limit when it comes to bizarre sexual practices, the release of bodily fluids, body mutilation, bestiality and morbid obesity. It might intrigue you. It will likely disgust and baffle you, but I guarantee it will not bore you.
