last night, i saw, i love you, phillip morris, starring jim carrey and ewan mcgregor, which is not being played -- yet -- in the u.s., because of its explicitly gay content. after several delays, it's now scheduled for oct. 2010.
after being decreasingly excited with carrey's interpretations of flat characters, this often distressing true story of a contradictory con-man who is motivated by deep love was refreshing.
this is a quick shot of the beautiful mosaic at the curved ticket counter at the mall in athens.

waking life
this came on late night tv several years ago, and i wasn't sure what i was seeing. i eventually searched for it and viewed it again.

we loved the his dark materials books and enjoyed watching the golden compass. we looked forward to seeing sequels and were greatly disappointed when we learned that none would be made.
philip pullman has written a new book, the good man jesus and the scoundrel christ... and it looks like some people don't like it.

carolyn porco deserves a star trek cameo!

anyone who visits this blog regularly knows of my deep appreciation for carolyn porco's work. here's a cause that gets my wholehearted, enthusiastic support:
'WHEREAS: dr. porco is as gifted a public speaker as any scientist we've ever heard; and
WHEREAS: there is probably no one living today who's as tirelessly dedicated to space exploration as dr. porco; and
WHEREAS: we think she'd look pretty awesome in a federation uniform
THEREFORE: we the undersigned propose that j.j. abrams & co. ensure that carolyn porco has a cameo appearance in the next installment of the star trek film series.'

alive in joberg
by neill blomkamp, maker of district 9. i saw the film a few days ago and was reading reviews -- and i stumbled on this short film.
at first, district 9 was hard to watch but it grew on me... and now i found myself surfing for more information. so, yeah, i liked it.

we went to see 'it's complicated' with meryl streep, alec baldwin and steve martin. i can't say i enjoyed it a whole lot, although there were some funny bits. it felt too contrived and unrealistic -- what planet do the creators live on? these characters lived way too well, had no real need to work, some scenes were completely unrealistic (her three grown kids so overwhelmingly upset they have a sleep-in) and some were token (the silly girl talk sessions with streep and her pals). [oh brother -- rolls eyes] the main character has a huge house, a garden, a vegetable garden, a swimming pool, yet still feels she needs to build a proper kitchen?
the comic relief was wonderful, provided not by steve martin as one would expect, but by john krasinski who played streep's son-in-law. completely brilliant.
after the movie, we noticed a very small makeshift ice skating rink for fun outside. i tried shooting the skaters but they were coming out way too blurry. so i shot the ice instead.
