wired.com: so if you had a lineup of enceladus, titan and europa, which are always brought up as good targets for astrobiology, which would you choose?

porco: oh, enceladus wins hands down. titan has no liquid water on its surface and any liquid water beneath its surface is inaccessible to us, as far as we know. it has hydrocarbon lakes, but we don’t know of any organisms that could live in those, not at the temperatures that we find on titan. any reference to possible life in lakes on the surface of titan is pure speculation.

we do know of subsurface earth ecologies that could thrive in the subsurface environment on enceladus. now that we know there’s salty water there, that shows there’s liquid water in contact with rock. biotic chemistry could occur that we know exists in volcanic environments miles underneath earth’s surface, where liquid water percolates through hot rocks.

as far as europa goes, europa very likely has an ocean under its surface. in that regard, europa and enceladus are on equal par. but on europa, the ocean is at least several kilometers under the surface and the moon is bathed in an intense radiation field. we can’t go there and just drill several kilometers down because the intense radiation field would fry a properly equipped spacecraft in several months.

so while there could indeed be life within the ocean of europa, it is presently inaccessible. the beauty of enceladus is all you have to do is land on the surface, look up and stick your tongue out. it could be snowing microbes at the south pole. we would be foolish not to head back there immediately.

'light in winter' and 'sagan's cosmos 30 years on' art show

this year, the ithaca tompkins county public library participated in the annual light in winter festival in ithaca, NY, with an art show entitled sagan's cosmos 30 years on: celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the PBS series cosmos: a personal voyage.  the exhibit opened on january 21st and featured never-before seen art of carl sagan, as well as massive images from the mars rover and the cassini mission.

i was happy to donate two of my sagan-inspired images to the exhibit:  pale blue dandy and little planet pendeli.

patrick fish, founder of the sagan appreciation society, very kindly forwarded some images from the opening night to me, as well as a link to the tompkins weekly which describes the exhibit in depth [on page 5].

the exhibit will be on display through february 27th -- so if you're in the ithaca area, you're very, very lucky.

fizzy enceladus

a breathable atmosphere on rhea

according to science, rhea has an 'oxygen–carbon dioxide atmosphere. the atmosphere appears to be sustained by chemical decomposition of the surface water ice under irradiation from saturn’s magnetospheric plasma.'

and io9 says,

'while the presence oxygen is relatively easy to understand, the carbon dioxide is actually even more intriguing. the gas is likely created by reactions between organic molecules and oxidants down on the moon's surface. that seems rather shockingly earth-like, or at least like the earth of a few billion years ago. this is just further proof that the building blocks and basic prerequisites of life exist all throughout the solar system, even if it was apparently only on earth where conditions were good enough for it to actually lead very far.'

anyone who visits this blog regularly knows of my deep appreciation for carolyn porco's work. here's a cause that gets my wholehearted, enthusiastic support:

'WHEREAS: dr. porco is as gifted a public speaker as any scientist we've ever heard; and

WHEREAS: there is probably no one living today who's as tirelessly dedicated to space exploration as dr. porco; and

WHEREAS: we think she'd look pretty awesome in a federation uniform

THEREFORE: we the undersigned propose that j.j. abrams & co. ensure that carolyn porco has a cameo appearance in the next installment of the star trek film series.'

breathtaking saturn

'cassini continues its extended tour of saturn with rev122, the spacecraft's 123rd orbit around the ringed planet. cassini begins rev122 on november 30 at its farthest distance from saturn, called apoapse. at this point, cassini is 2.5 million kilometers (1.55 million miles) from saturn's cloud tops. during rev122, cassini orbits in the ring and orbital plane of saturn's main satellites, providing an opportunity for cassini to encounter some of saturn's moons as well as observe mutual events between the various satellites.'
