wired interviews carolyn porco!

wired.com: so if you had a lineup of enceladus, titan and europa, which are always brought up as good targets for astrobiology, which would you choose?

porco: oh, enceladus wins hands down. titan has no liquid water on its surface and any liquid water beneath its surface is inaccessible to us, as far as we know. it has hydrocarbon lakes, but we don’t know of any organisms that could live in those, not at the temperatures that we find on titan. any reference to possible life in lakes on the surface of titan is pure speculation.

we do know of subsurface earth ecologies that could thrive in the subsurface environment on enceladus. now that we know there’s salty water there, that shows there’s liquid water in contact with rock. biotic chemistry could occur that we know exists in volcanic environments miles underneath earth’s surface, where liquid water percolates through hot rocks.

as far as europa goes, europa very likely has an ocean under its surface. in that regard, europa and enceladus are on equal par. but on europa, the ocean is at least several kilometers under the surface and the moon is bathed in an intense radiation field. we can’t go there and just drill several kilometers down because the intense radiation field would fry a properly equipped spacecraft in several months.

so while there could indeed be life within the ocean of europa, it is presently inaccessible. the beauty of enceladus is all you have to do is land on the surface, look up and stick your tongue out. it could be snowing microbes at the south pole. we would be foolish not to head back there immediately.

communicating atheism

panel discussion: communicating atheism at the world atheist convention, o'callaghan alexander hotel, dublin ireland 2011. uploaded by aronra. the speakers are rebecca watson, aronra, tom melchiorre and richard dawkins. playlist of four seven videos:

kevin myers: myth of dawkins as an intolerant, atheist crusader is just that -- myth

just after being called evangelical by a friend, i find it comforting to not be alone... if only i had the a fraction of the knowledge and ability to persuade as the dawk:

at the independent.ie:

'dawkins is simply not the austere and proselytising dogmatist of myth. such people expect and almost seek confrontation, whereas he merely wishes to make his case.'

the entire piece here, although i rather prefer this image than to the austere one they have chosen:

an impressive appearance... but i was especially floored by this exchange at the Q&A:

Q: when do you think we will be able to criticize islam without threatening our very existence?

A:  on the face of it, it's a remarkably effective tactic -- isn't it -- to say, ok, i've lost the argument; therefore, if you try to argue against me, i'll cut your head off.  it's really an admission of defeat. i am not one of those who thinks that we should go out of our way to insult islam recklessly or foolishly because it doesn't do any good to get your head cut off. what we should say is something like this: i may give way to you, i may refrain from -- what should we say -- publishing a cartoon of your prophet, but it's because i fear you. don't for one moment think it's because i respect you.

the great debate: what is life?

oh, joy... enthralling, fast-paced, funny -- please listen to this discussion at TSN:

'richard dawkins, j. craig venter, nobel laureates sidney altman and leland hartwell, chris mckay, paul davies, lawrence krauss, and the science network’s roger bingham discuss the origins of life, the possibility of finding life elsewhere, and the latest development in synthetic biology.'

this discussion combines cutting-edge thinking with humor, science, star trek -- you name it, it's got it.

thank you, RDFRS!

is there an afterlife? a debate

at the jewish tv network:

click image to view debate at source
on the panel: sam harris, christopher hitchens, david wolpe and bradley artson.

i've just started listening to this and the first argument from the first speaker, david wolpe, has started with a dull thud.

to the question, if he expects to go to heaven, he argues that part of the problem of the idea of an afterlife is that we take it more literally than it needs to be and that makes it ridiculous. he says that before we entered this world, we could not have imagined mountains and tunafish and teeth and ideas -- of course not. it is unimaginable. but we expect to be able to imagine the other world, reducing it to nonsense.

except that i didn't exist before being born, therefore i don't remember trying to imagine any of it. if i existed, i have no recollection of it at all, and it has no discernible effect on my present life... so it's completely irrelevant. and why, if there's so much talk about an afterlife, is there no curiosity about a prelife? this is nonsense.

i sincerely hope i hear something interesting from the theists by the time this finishes.

EDIT:  harris started of well.  relaying his fear that this debate would bore the audience, he quoted his wife as saying, 'nothing hitchens does is ever boring'.
EDIT again:  hitchens can quote literature and scripture too -- specifically, star wars.
EDIT yet again:  very enjoyable... great points from all around.
