(2008) ***1/2
Two brothers kidnap a girl and hold up in an abandoned cottage. As they are waiting for a third partner to come through with the ransom delivery they happen on a bit of a problem. They discover their neighbor is a psychopathic brute who like to kill and dismember people. What starts out as a simple plan to get rich, winds up being a fight for their lives in this entertaining black comedy.
I seem to have stumbled upon a mother load of comedy horror this year. Could it be that they have been making more comedy horror than straight horror over the past decade or so? The Cottage is brought to us from the UK and it really is a fun film. The Brits seem to have a knack for the black comedy genre and they do it well. The brothers are perfectly paired like a straight man and his bumbling side kick. The hostage is no meek helpless girl either, she's a real firecracker. It probably could have been blessed with another heaping helping of gore but it doesn't fall short either. What it does have is pizazz, the characters are loaded with personality. The film quite obviously doesn't take itself too seriously and that's what makes it work. Fun watch.
