The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
(1966) ***1/2
Easily startled, blustery typesetter Luther Heggs finds himself spending the night in the old Simmons mansion, where a murder-suicide had taken place twenty years previously. The publication of his nocturnal experiences makes him a bona-fide celebrity in his small midwestern town, until the heir to the mansion sues him for libel. How to determine the truth? The court case can only be decided with a visit to the old mansion at the stroke of midnight.
When Catfreeek brought this film to our collective attention, I knew Mr. AC and I hadda watch it this 'thon, and so we did. As expected, it was lots of fun and even had some suspenseful moments, really! Don Knotts totally carries the film, but the well-cast supporting actors provide a funny and nostalgic small-midwestern-town feel. Recommended for biddies and anyone else needing a break from all that nasty blood and gore.
